Features and benefits of Microsoft Windows 7

There are many features and benefits to upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Windows.

Faster, more responsive performance as nobody likes to wait. Microsoft designed Windows 7 to be much more responsive and simpler to use than previous versions. Windows 7 was developed to make your PC start-up, shut-down, resume from standby and generally respond faster.

There are less interruptions and when Windows 7 needs your attention, you will see an Action Centre icon on the task-bar.

Have you ever wanted to stream media in your home as Windows 7 makes it much easier to do this using your PC. You can stream music, videos and photographs to your television or another networked media device.Microsoft Windows 7 Homegroup

HomeGroup feature of Windows 7 makes it much easier for those people unfamiliar with networking to share files and printers across multiple PCs in a household. It is set-up automatically when you add your first PC running Windows 7 to your network.

The task-bar has been improved and includes full-screen previews. You can pin any application (e.g. Microsoft Word) so it is always just a click away. You can re-arrange the icons on your task-bar by simply dragging-and-dropping. Hover over any active application icon and you can see a useful thumbnail screen-shot.

The Jump Lists in Windows 7 are a very useful way of reaching the files you have been working with. Simply right-click on the icon and the list will appear. An example would be right-clicking on the Microsoft Excel icon which would display the most recent spreadsheets you have been working on.

There are many new desktop enhancements such as the ability to compare two windows using Snap. Just grab a window and pull it to either side edge of your display to fill half the screen then "Snap" the other window to fill the other half.

The improved Windows Search makes search results more relevant and easier to understand. Windows Search also utilises a new feature called Libraries (virtual folders) which show all content of a particular type, e.g. photographs or music, in a single, convenient location.Windows 7 Device Management (Printer)

It is now more straight-forward to manage your external devices with Windows 7. There is a single Devices and Printers screen to connect, manage (administrate) and use whatever printer, telephone, scanner you might own.

Possibly the most useful feature in today's more-connected society is the View Available Network (VAN) utility which provides one-click access to networks (e.g. WiFi, mobile broadband, VPN etc.) in the vicinity of your computer, regardless of their type.

How can I upgrade to Windows 7?

If you are currently running Microsoft Windows XP, you can only upgrade to Microsoft Windows 7 by what is known as a clean-install. This involves transferring all your personal files to a safe location (e.g. external hard drive), removing Microsoft Windows XP completely and installing Windows 7 from a CD/DVD disk.

If you are running Microsoft Windows Vista, upgrading to Microsoft Windows 7 is slightly more straight-forward. You can do a clean-install or an in-place upgrade which overwrites Windows Vista with Windows 7.

Most people are understandably nervous about changing or upgrading their operating system. We offer a service where we will back-up your files, install a Microsoft Windows 7 edition of your choice (see above) and restore your applications and files.

What do I need?

As with all new operating systems, requirements often exceed that of it's predecessor in order to take advantage of new features. Microsoft recommends the following minimum system requirements to run Microsoft Windows 7.

  • 1Ghz or faster CPU (processor) with 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) architecture
  • 1GB RAM for 32-bit processors and 2GB RAM for 64-bit processors
  • 16GB available disk space for 32-bit editions and 20GB for 64-bit editions
  • DirectX 9 graphics processor (display card) supporting WDDM 1.x or higher

Whilst the above system specifications will run Windows 7, we recommend a minimum 2Ghz processor, 2GB RAM and 512MB display card to fully appreciate the Windows 7 experience and all the features it has to offer.
